Going.com Extends Web Localization Trend, Links Events & Friends

Going.com offers users a community for posting events -- everything from pool parties to Editor's Picks for Music, Movies, Nightlife and Activities which appears to be code for catch-all. Activities include such things as Cheese Eating Contests and the International Sneaker Battle. I'm not making this stuff up, honest.

Don't despair if a Brie-a-thon is not your idea of a good time, though. There are plenty of other offerings like concerts, movie screenings, theaters, community parties, book clubs and more.

Here's how they pitch it:

How it works

* Find something fun you'd like to do. We have tons of ways to help you do that, such as by popularity (how many others are interested), by time, by distance, or using our Editors' Picks.
* See who else wants to go. Don't be shy; people are meeting up to go do stuff all the time. Feel free to post a message for the event to see who else's up for meeting up.
* Find fun people who share your interests. Look up groups that sound interesting and say hi. See who's similar in interests, then post a comment or send them a friend request. Most people are pretty friendly.
* Come to a Going party. We have parties every month for people on the Web site. It's a great way to make a lot of friends in a jiffy. Hope to see you at the next one!

You can invite friends to an event, print out a map or post a comment on the outing. Naturally, Going-ers can share events they're attending on facebook using a built-in widget.

As the web becomes increasingly localized (Google Local, Yelp, etc.), sites continually crop up which blend information about local events, sites, lodging, dining with the ever-popular trend of user-driven content and human networks. Yet how will these new sites fare against more traditional content providers like local newspapers? Or will newspapers partner (or outsource altogether) with sites like Going once they are proven.

Currently limited to happenings in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, Going.com plans to expand in coming months boosting attendance at footwear showdowns -- among other local events -- in LA, London and Miami.

Sorry DC, no love...again.
