Social Media Gets Presidential for Barack Obama

The guys over at CNet have compiled reports of web usage during the Inauguration of President Barack Obama which indicate record traffic for the period leading up to and including President Obama's swearing-in and speech.

Content delivery vendor Akamai reports about 5.4 million visitors per minute visiting online news outlets -- well below Obama's victory in November which pulled in nearly 8.6 million visitors.

However, CNN.com reports serving more than 18.8 million live video streams since 6 a.m. EST on Tuesday. CNet goes on to report that the CNN number is a record as the 2008 election day served up only 5.3 million live streams.

Facebook also reported around 4000 status updates per minute. 'Millions' of members logged into the social media application during the ceremony.
