Google has now added video chat to its GMail product, inching ever closer to a more enterprise-like platform. The initial response from the blogosphere has been largely positive and most reviewers indicate it is a nice addition to the popular GMail offering.
The upgraded chat feature doesn't require leaving the familiar GMail interface which would seem to be a plus versus other standalone applications, like Skype. Expanding the GMail feature set to include video/audio chat - though fairly vanilla in this iteration -- makes the Gmail/Google Docs platform increasingly plausible as an integrated suite of Office-like applications. This fact may ultimately impact platforms like Skype which offer more features and options but are not integrated into a similar suite.
GMail users only need to install a plug-in to get started.
