What's That: Mashups
What is a mashup? Put simply, a mashup combines a variety of online information - data, images, maps, products and so on - into one web application. But where did they come from and what do you do with them?

According to blog monitor Technorati, a new blog is created every half-second or so. That means roughly half a million new blogs each week. While this level of growth may be hard to sustain, there is little question about the impact of the blogosphere on the flow of information and it serves as a kind of indicator for what is going on in the world (news, trends, etc).

With the launch of Trailer Park, MySpace now offers a "one-stop-shop" for movie trailers. True to the MySpace model, users can add trailers to their MySpace pages, view still photos or visit the MySpace page for a particular movie. Obvious shortcomings are a lack of basic information about the movie such as release date but our guess is the guys at MySpace will remedy that in short order.

With the popularity of Google Maps, now you can add your own notes, photos and YouTube videos to specific locations around the globe. You can decide to share your additions with just your friends or include them to be searchable from the Google Maps site. This is another mashup from Google that combines maps, media sharing and social networking aspects.So, next time you are at your favorite restaurant, snap a photo and upload it to Google Maps for all to see. Google SMS is a service that allows you to send a simple text message out and receive detailed information back from Google on a variety of topics. You can perform searches, translate words into foreign languages, get directions and now, find out if your flight is on time and from which gate it is departing. It all starts with entering 466453 (Google) as the SMS number in your cell phone. Then send a message with a keyword and some detail after it:
